Treatments Options for Scarring

Scar Treatment Overview

Many kinds of scars can be reduced with lasers and other surgical techniques. The array of available methods and devices increases every year.  At the Dermatology Laser Center of San Antonio™ we tailor the treatment to the kind of scar (or scars), and may use a surgical approach such as ScarRelease™, injections with corticosteroids, the CO2 laser, IPL (intense-pulsed light),dermal fillers such as Restylane™, Radiesse™ and Sculptra™, or a combination of methods.

Types of treatments

We use different approaches for certain types of scars.  For surgical scars we may excise the scar and/or reduce its width with one of our lasers. For hypertrophic scars (or keloids) we may inject with corticosteroids and/or treat with IPL (intense-pulsed light).  For some types of acne scars, we may  first surgically remove certain prominent scars and then resurface one area or the whole face with the CO2 super-pulsed (NovaPulse) laser.

New, Better Treatments: Facial Acne Scars

Helping patients with acne scarring is a welcome challenge - and one usually rewarded with satisfying results.

ScarRelease™ surgical subcision---with just local anesthesia we can painlessly release some of the fibrous strands that tether facial scars inward, creating the indented or rolling scar pattern caused by facial acne. Downtime is surprisingly minimal and the fees reasonable. ScarRelease™ subcision can be sometimes combined with ablative laser resurfacing to achieve even greater smoothness. Soft tissue augmentation with “fillers” like Restylane™, Radiesse™ and Sculptra™ can even out certain scar-induced defects for a period of months to years. In-office surgery and Kenalog™ (“cortisone”) injections also plays a role in reducing some types of acne scars.

Scar reduction results
There are other treatment options for different kinds of scars. Most people treated realize substantial improvement in the look or feel of their scar(s). But it must be remembered that the realistic goal is IMPROVEMENT, not perfection.
