What is BOTOX®?

Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin, a prescription injectable FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of facial frown lines. When injected into wrinkles, tiny amounts of BOTOX relax the surrounding muscles. This has the effect of smoothing the skin so that the wrinkles disappear. Botox injections are effective for wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet. BOTOX selectively weakens tiny facial muscles by blocking the impulses that cause them to contract. This quieting of selected muscles allows overlying skin to remain smooth and unwrinkled, while untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion.

 

How is BOTOX® Injected?
BOTOX® is injected with tiny needles directly into the muscles associated with frown lines; stinging pain is mild and temporary; and bruising is occasional and short-term. In 3 to 7 days the muscles relax and the frown lines are reduced or disappear altogether. 

 

How long does BOTOX® last?
BOTOX® injections are generally quite popular in the patients who get them. They enjoy being free of distracting frown lines which may make them look angry, tense or older than they are. The effect usually lasts 3 to 6 months. Injections may be repeated as often as the patient likes. With repeated injections the effects are longer-lasting and sometimes become permanent
