| Blepharoplasty
(eyelid surgery) |
Blepharoplasty
(eyelid surgery) has
become one of the mose popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the
US. Every year, thousands
of men and
women choose blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to improve the way they look.
Why?
Droopy eyelids make you look
tired and older. Eyelid
surgery can correct the drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes -
the features that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even
interfere with your vision
What
is Blepharoplasty and how is it done?
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery, eyelid lift, eyelid tuck) is a procedure
to removes the excess fat, muscle, and skin from both upper
and lower lids. Eyelid surgery or
Blepharoplasty, is performed on adults of all ages. Some people have eyelid
surgery to correct aging problems, while others have inherited traits that
cause them to seek treatment in their 20s or 30s.
On the upper
eye, Incisions are made in the natural creases of the eyelid and usually heal extremely fast. Dr. Davis uses a method called transconjunctival laser-assisted
blepharoplasty for the lower lids.
This procedure offers very good cosmetic results and avoids an
incision and scar of the lower eyelid and includes laser resurfacing of the
area under the eyes.
Who
are the best candidates for Blepharoplasty?
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are men and women who are
physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. Any one or combination of the following
conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery:
-
Excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
-
Loose skin hanging
down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
-
A puffy appearance to
the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
-
Excess skin and fine,
creepy wrinkles of the lower eyelids
-
Bags and dark circles
under the eyes, often with a depression along the bony border of the lower
eyelids.
-
Droopiness of the
lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)
What
are the risks or complications?
The minor
complications that occasionally follow blepharoplasty include double or
blurred vision for a few days; temporary swelling at the corner of the
eyelids; and a slight asymmetry in healing or scarring. You can reduce your
risks by closely following your physician's instructions both before and after
surgery.
There is minimal
discomfort after the procedure that may be relieved with Tylenol. Some swelling and discoloration may
develop around the eyes for a few days. The swelling is helped by cold/ice
packs the day of the procedure and the day after. Most patients can return to work or social
activities in less than a week.
What
results can I expect?
The results can be a refreshed appearance, with a younger, firmer eye
area. The eyes appear more rested and
vibrant. The results can be so natural
that friends and co-workers will often comment on how great you look, buy may
not realize that surgery was performed.
Can
I have other procedures or treatments done at the same time?
You
can combine other procedures (such as Restylane®,
Radiesse®, or Sculptra®) for
filling in wrinkles, Botox Cosmetic™, or laser facial skin resurfacing
) along with your blepharoplasty. If you have a specific procedure in mind,
bring it up during your consultation so we can discuss if they are compatible.
How do I
know if I need eyelid surgery?
The best way to determine if you need to
consider blepharoplasty surgery is simple: Look
in the mirror.
Do you appear tired even though you
aren't?
Is the skin of your upper eyelid
overhanging the normal lid crease and nearing the eyelashes?
Are there bulges and bags where there
shouldn't be?
Do your eyes appear smaller than they did
in years past?
If you're
much over forty, chances are that some or all of the above may be present.
Why else might you consider eyelid surgery?
You
may be able to feel an extra heaviness in the upper lid or feel its skin
sitting on your lashes. To increase your peripheral vision, you need to lift
up your forehead. Your boss may call you in and start dropping hints about
retirement. Perhaps your father looked awfully baggy by age sixty and you
really don't relish the idea of watching the same thing happen to you.
So, how do you tell if you really need cosmetic eye surgery? In fact, most people never need to
have a blepharoplasty. Baggy eyelids are simply not the same as a disease. The reason you undergo cosmetic eyelid surgery is because
you WANT it!
