Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser is an acronym for Light
Amplification by Stimulated
Emission of Radiation.
Laser
skin resurfacing is a highly effective procedure for the treatment of aging
and sun-damaged skin. At the
Dermatology & Laser Center of San Antonio, we use the NovaPulse CO2
(Carbon Dioxide) laser and the Erbium laser systems to erase lines, wrinkles,
and acne scars, and reveal the soft, smooth, younger-looking skin beneath.
How does Laser Resurfacing work?
Lasers and intense pulsed-light have produced major advancements in facial
skin resurfacing. Superpulsed CO2
lasers, such as the Luxar NovaPulse CO2 laser used in our office,
deliver precise, invisible beams of laser light in extremely short bursts
(pulses), each lasting tiny fractions of a second. This allows micro-fine
layers of skin to be vaporized with each pass of the laser and then be gently
wiped away, producing a smooth base which is soon covered by fresh, new skin
cells. By varying the number of laser passes and power, the Dr. Davis can
smooth down the whole face or individual units of it, such as around the mouth
(peri-oral), between the eyes (glabellar) or around the eyes (peri-orbital)
regions. As the new outer layer of
skin grows, the body's natural healing mechanism stimulates new collagen
formation. The result is smoother, healthier looking skin with a natural,
youthful glow and fewer wrinkles and scars.
Uses of Facial Skin
Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing may be
performed on the whole face or in specific regions, and is often done in
conjunction with other procedures such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
For small procedures, local anesthetics are injected gently and with
little discomfort. For full face
procedures, in-office sedation is used for added comfort.
Laser resurfacing is performed in
our office to treat the following:
- Erase
fine lines and wrinkles of the face, especially on the upper lip, cheeks
and forehead.
- Smooth
and tighten eyelid skin
- Improve
crow's feet around the eyes
- Soften
pucker marks and frown lines
- Remove
brown spots and splotchy, uneven skin color
- Diminish
scars
- Improve
overall texture of the skin
- Repair
smoker's lines

Types and Success
The ability to deliver uniform pulses of varying energy levels now makes
it possible to treat people of differing pigmentary and skin types. During
your consultation, Dr. Davis will give you a realistic idea of what to expect
from your treatment. While not a total cure for wrinkles, blotches or scars,
facial skin resurfacing typically produces results which are very gratifying.
