Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating, the causes of which are numerous. This condition can lead to embarrassment, loss of confidence, low self-esteem, and a compromised lifestyle.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Antiperspirants / Deodorants

Often the first line of treatment for excessive underarm sweating: both over-the-counter and prescription strength antiperspirants are available. Antiperspirants use chemicals such as aluminum chloride and other metallic salts to block the sweat ducts. The goal is to reduce the amount of sweat that reaches the skin. The down side, however, is that high concentrations of these harsh chemicals can cause skin irritation and can ruin certain clothing.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis uses an electronic device that conducts mild electrical currents to a skin surface which is submerged in shallow water during the process. (do NOT try this at home without medical assistance). Each 20-40 minute treatment is initially done 3-4 times a week, and can be maintained on a once weekly basis. Although scientists and researchers are not 100% sure how this process actually works to reduce excessive sweating, (nor do we know how they came up with this crazy thing), we do know that Iontophoresis works well for palm and foot hyperhidrosis. When treating the armpits, spongy pads are soaked in water and applied to the skin, then connected to the electrical generator

BOTOX® Therapeutic

BOTOX® has recently gained FDA-approval for severe underarm sweating when topical agents don't work. BOTOX® treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from- the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don't receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® prevents sweating by blocking the signal that causes the sweat gland to produce sweat.

What areas of the body can be treated with BOTOX®?
Sweating of the underarms, hands (palms), and feet (soles) can be treated with BOTOX®.

WILL THE TREATMENT BE COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Many insurance companies will now cover BOTOX® Treatment for hyperhidrosis.  Schedule a consultation today to determine if this treatment is right for you.

CAN ANYONE BE TREATED WITH bOTOX®?
People with a history of certain neurological disorders should not consider any form of BOTOX® treatment. Furthermore, BOTOX® is not administered to women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, people who are taking certain medications, or those who have previously experienced an adverse reaction to BOTOX® treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?
Over the course of the first few days following a treatment, most patients will notice a gradual but significant reduction in the degree of sweating over the treated area. Results will vary based on the patient, the treatment area, the dose of BOTOX® used, and the level of pre-treatment sweating.  Potential side effects may include bruising, pain during the procedure, and temporary localized muscle weakness. These side effects, if they occur at all, are temporary and generally resolve quickly.
