Treatment for Facial veins
& Superficial Leg Veins (spider veins)
Laser
and IPL Therapy
Dermatologic lasers and intense-
pulsed light (IPL) units are well established for eliminating or
reducing vascular lesions such as facial veins and shallow blood vessels
(spider veins) on the legs. Lasers
and IPL systems are also used to treat benign pigmented
lesions such as age spots, birthmarks, and tattoos. Facial veins and spider veins may be
treated with IPL or lasers, either by themselves or in combination
with sclerotherapy (saline injections). You can learn more about these
treatments by reading about our PhotoDermŪ VL laser, VasculightŪ laser and Palomar
Starlux IPL system.
How many
treatments are required?
The number of treatments necessary varies depending on the size of the area treated;
for example, reducing fine veins around the nose and brown spots on the
cheeks of a fair-skinned individual typically takes 2 to 5 treatments with
the IPL device. During your consultation,
an
approximate number of treatments will be recommended.
What are
the side effects and is there "down time"?
There is generally no significant “down time” and most patients
resume regular activities immediately. Redness, pinkness or mild swelling is
common and usually lasts a few hours after the treatment. Occasionally the
redness can last for a day or more and/or be accompanied by bruising or mild
blistering. Such side effects
typically heal without scars.
Sclerotherapy
(saline injections)
Sclerotherapy
is a popular option for elimination of superficial or shallow spider leg
veins. During the Sclerotherapy procedure, a saline solution is injected into
the vein through a fine-needle. The sclerosing
solution causes the vein to blanch (turn white), then gradually, over 6
– 8 weeks, to disappear. A typical treatment may last for 15 to 25
minutes and consist of multiple injections; and several treatments may be
needed to obtain optimal results.
